Making the Kitchen
After a few weeks, I've made progress on the first room: the kitchen. I painted, laid tile then grouted, laid flooring, put up trim, and finally put up the shelving.
Right now I have a pristine room that now needs to be dirtied up and aged. While I worked I put my phone in the little room and watched horror movies on it. Even though it was in the upper 90's for most of this, I still wanted the background noise. Movies I watched over the process over the last few weekends were: Malevolent, Alien, The Conference, Valentines (and absolutely horrible early 2000's slasher with David Boreanez), some episodes of "Hannibal", and Prom Night (not the original with Jaimie Lee Cutis, but the cheesy remake with Idris Elba). I like the vibes and the background noise kept me company while I worked. I got a tremendous crick in my upper back and neck from leaning into the house. My main materials were popsicle sticks, basswood, balsawood, wood glue, tiny dowels, tiny plaster tiles (I used over 1000), spackle to grout with, and wood stain. I chose a medium stain called something like "Antique American".
All in all, it's coming well. I even posted on Reddit and to my surprise got lots of interest in my picture of the glue bottle next to the window. I am trying to decide what to put into the room, and if I should do the walls and ceiling and floor first, then move on to furniture OR do I finish the bare bones of a room then move on to the parlor before I furnish it. I can't decide. In the kitchen I've decided to have references to these horror movies: Poltergeist, Silence of the Lambs, The Blair Witch, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Black Christmas, Ernest Scared Stupid, The Conjuring, and the Wicker Man. Each will be little "easter eggs" placed in the kitchen that fit in with the room's environment. I am missing a kitchen sink, which I ordered. One of those 1930's farmhouse free-standing ones. I also ordered a kitchen table. I wanted a circular one because my centerpiece of the kitchen will be the stacked kitchen chair scene from the movie "Poltergeist", so I'm trying to see if just getting the "flavor" and not the actual identical table and chairs would satisfy me. I've popped in a bunch of pictures of the whole process. And at the end even put in some furniture to play with layouts.
