Adventures in Miniature: building a haunted dollhouse

Welcome to my long-form art project: building and customizing my first large dollhouse as a spooky, story-filled world.

One dollhouse, countless eerie details

Adventures in miniature is my personal blog about transforming an unfinished, hand-built dollhouse into my own personal haunted mansion.

I love horror, in all it's forms and genres.  I'm an artist, and art teacher, so while I have an eye for things, this is my first dive into handcrafting/staging a vision into miniature.

I’ll share the real process as it unfolds: sometimes weekly, sometimes less.  I am full-time teacher, so I only have time to really work on the weekends.  I'm mainly doing this for myself to hold me accountable to this large, long-form art project that I've been researching for over a year.

First Steps: Kitchen

It's a four-day weekend and I spent the last 2 days working on the first room: the kitchen.  While I worked I watched/listened to some horror movies.  It may be 105 outside, but it's still September and close enough for creepy things.  I cued them up on my phone and had a lil tv in the house while I worked.  I "watched": "You're Next", "Alien", "The Ritual", and got a bit through "Army of the Dead" before I called it quits.

Prime Time

So the house is upstairs and on a spot I can work on it easily. This thing was a beast to move upstairs. So glad it's there, but realized that it makes the room smell like basement. It stinks.  The house was in a basement for decades, so that makes sense, but the mildew/mouse/dust stew is pretty strong.  So I decided since it's all unfinished wood I'd prime it.  I hate priming.  But I had some Zinsser Mold, Mildew, & Odor Control primer from a bathroom project earlier this year and I put on Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" then "The Nun" and attempted to get the wood in a better place.  As you can see below, I didn't quite get to every room, and the house is now too high up for me to access the attic rooms.  As I painted, I caulked areas that needed it and noticed there was trim and baseboards in some of the rooms but not all.  Thankfully there's a box of leftover bits already the right size that came with Hilda that I can finish that up.  BUT, I was thinking in terms of if this was a real house, or a stage set, and I have a lot to do before I can even think of the window and door trim.  My goal is to get the remaining rooms primed.  Do a 2nd coat on all of the ceilings, then I'll start with walls.  I'd really like to do wallpaper, in every room and tile in the large kitchen area.  Oh, and I'm STILL finding mouse poop as my brush gets in the nooks and crannies.  They must have been living large. Hopefully I can do more this week, but if I'm too tired from work, I have a 4-day weekend coming up to keep doing the prepping steps.

Tiny Things

Today I thought was going to be "the day": moving this beast of a house off my front porch and to the upstairs area I have made to work on it.  I've been looking forward to it all week.  Welp, my husband decided at the last minute to take our son to a Pokemon event. They've been gone for almost 12 hours.  So, no moving I guess.  What I DID decide to do was to go through the little dollhouse things I already have.  I have a large laundry basket from an estate sale I went to earlier this summer. The former owners built dollhouses and their house was FILLED with everything you can imagine.  I filled a basket and got tons of furnishings.  I also have what I could salvage from the dollhouse itself (I think she needs a name.  I'll have to think of one).  So I took some pics and decided to add these tiny things to today's post.  I chose my favorites.

Let's Clean It Up!

I have loved miniatures since I was a little girl.  My grandparents had a wonderful, fully furnished 1960's dollhouse that belonged to my late aunt that we were allowed to play with (under supervision whenever we'd visit them at their apartment in Chicago.  Eventually, they allowed us to take it home down-state where my mother, sister, and I lightly renovated it.  We wore that house down.  For the past year, I've been following on IG some fantastic dollhouse creators (check our House of Viridian and Southern Gothic Dollhouse for a couple).  My dream was to do it myself.  Create my own 3-d artwork of everything I love about horror, be my own interior designer (because, let's face it, it's not going to happen in my real house).

This is a project built one tiny detail at a time. Browse the gallery to see photos of the latest work, then visit the materials and haunted themes pages for inspiration behind the next chapter of this miniature adventure.  This is not a full-time job.  It's going to be a weekend thing for me.  Hopefully I'll figure out the ins and outs of this webpage/blog format and start making more progress.  Despite the fact that I'm Gen X, I've never had a blog before.  I'm 30 years late on this stuff.

But here's another picture of the front (which opens to all but 4 of the rooms)!  This is from pre-sanitizing and cleaning out.
